Today I had students staple in page 3 why we use the interactive notebook interactivewhy.docx and notebookrules.docx which has expectations on what students will use their notebook for and how to take care of it.
All students took a pretest today on the content that they will be exposed to this semester. This pretest is not for a grade but will be used for student growth purposes. We will also use the information that we have gathered to shape our lessons and make sure we spend less time on what the students already know and more time on what the students do not know.
Who knew that setting up an interactive notebook would take up so much time! First, I had student staple in the table of contents on the very first page of the notebook. Then, I had students turn to the very back of the notebook and take the last 3 pages and make them the glossary. Next, I had students turn back to the front of the notebook and start numbering every page in the notebook starting on the back of the Table of Contents page. Then on page 1, students made a goals chart and I had them fill in the year goal and Q1 goal.(See picture below) Last, on page 2 I had students staple in a 3 week Bell Work paper. Each day students will come into the classroom and use this paper to write today's bell work question and the answer.
After students made the Students will... statements, I took the top 4 statements from all of my classes and students voted at http://tinyurl.com/sciencenorms for their favorite statements. Then I took the top results and make a large poster and had students take ownership by signing the poster. It will proudly be displayed in my classroom and will serve as a reminder to myself and all students what our expectations are for one another.
On Friday, the class had been tasked to come up with a set of norms for classroom expectations and behavior. Student were prompted to answer 8 questions to formulate a set of norms. To do this, students were put in 8 groups of 4 and a question was placed on each table. Students then had 2 minutes to respond to each question and then they rotated tables. After all questions were answered, students took a look at the responses and came up with Students will statements. Please see the PowerPoint provided by Mrs. Tafoya for more information.Classroom Norms
9/8/16 We went over the syllabus for the class. Please find them under the ABOUT button an the top of this page. Then I had students tell me about themselves by filling out the All About Me worksheet and writing me a personal letter about themselves on the back of the worksheet.
In class this week we are working on collaboration, communication and teamwork. The first thing I wanted to introduce is white boards to my classes. I had students brainstorm why we use white boards in Science using the white boards. This turned into a great classroom discussion. Next, we moved into an activity called Helping Harry. Students then used the white boards to brainstorm ideas to Help Harry.
We are off to a great start! On the first day of school, I divide the students into 9 groups of 4 students using a deck of playing cards. Students had to find their 4 of a kind to make groups:) Then, I provided students with a challenge called Words From String. Students were given a large sheet of paper, 1 marker and 4 pieces of string. Each student in the group had to attach their string to the marker. Next, they could only hold on to just the string to work together to write a word that reminds them of Science.
